Hispanic Racism
Jul. 11th, 2006 06:48 pmI heard an interesting story on LatinoUSA about an exhibition at the Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum in Chicago on "The African Presence in Mexico." Then recently someone on chat mentioned a study showing that latino immigrants brought with them some pervasive racist stereotypes about blacks from their home countries.
It's about time that hispanic racism gets opened up, I think there has been a reluctance to talk about it because of concern about appearing bigotted for bringing it up but your really don't have to do much more than take a drive down chicon in East austin to notice how palpable the racial devide between blacks and hispanics is, blacks live north of 7th street, hispanics live south. There is an increadibly abrupt change in the entire feel of the neighborhoods, they are both poor and rundown, but on one side the signs are in spanish.
