I saw Serenity last night and while there was little question that I was going to like it, I'm always suprised at how much depth and compassion Joss Whedon brings to his work.

For a scifiwestern it's kind of funny that the most compelling thing about it is how real the charecters feel. The complications, contradictions, and convolutions of humanity really comes through in this movie. I have this memory from some sci-fi story or book about someone waking up from hibernation and being disappointed that the fundamental nature of mankind hadn't changed, hadn't improved. In Joss Whedon's 'verse this is stinkingly apparent, and it is a tonic to the super clean perfected world of Star Trek. It's a lot of the same thing that makes the new Battlestar Galactica so good. In fact

Serenity had the sort of depth you usually only expect out of the "indie movie" set.

a week or two ago my replay tv 4k started skipping during playback occasionally
it got so bad I lost the last 20 mintues of the season finale of battlestar galactica

several repeated hard reboots (holding the power button down for 6 seconds) seemed to resolve or at least improve that, but then I started having problems with it detecting incoming signal (through the coax connection)

So I decided to pop the case and blow the dust out. There was much more dust in there than I was expecting.

I'm trying to decide what I want to do, I could try to see if they can refurbish it, get a tivo (they have one for 50$ now after a rebate 13$/mo or 300$ life), go with the timewarner dvr (10$/mo no hardware charge), or drop 150 for a hoppauge tunergard and Windows media center.
